Traditional Village of Agios Athanasios
At a distance of just 16km. from the ski center of Vora or Kaimaktsalan and just a few kilometers from the city of waters Edessa, in a location with a wonderful view of Mount Vora and Lake Vegoritida, lies the traditional settlement of Agios Athanasios.
Agios Athanasios, built at an altitude of 1,020 m., Was abandoned in the 80's by its inhabitants, due to the extremely harsh living conditions. A few years later, with the operation of the Ski Center, this old village, which due to its traditional architecture was characterized as a Traditional Settlement, became a place sought after by those interested in winter sports in the North.
Its traditional stone houses, the wonderful climate and the short distance from the ski resort (just 16km) raised its interest and demand. Developments for this settlement were unpredictably rapid. His dilapidated houses were transformed into stone palaces! Modern hotels, hostels, rooms to let and apartment complexes, taverns and various shops built of local stone and wood, serve hundreds of visitors daily and promise a comfortable and pleasant stay.
During the winter the village is flooded with visitors. It is the starting point for climbers, travelers, hikers and riding lovers. It offers options and routes of exceptional natural beauty. It is rightly characterized by the numerous visitors of "Petrino Chorio".
The village dates back to the 14th century and its old name is Tsegani. It is worth visiting the church of the Ascension which was built in 1700, contains icons of the 18th and 19th century and has been designated as a protected post-Byzantine monument.
